Combined Decongestive Therapy

Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a comprehensive treatment approach used to manage Lymphoedema and Lipedema. It involves a combination of several techniques aimed at reducing swelling and preventing its recurrence. The main components of CDT include:

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

A specialized, gentle form of massage that encourages the movement of lymph fluid out of the affected limb, thus stimulating the Lymphatic System to work harder.

Compression Therapy

Use of bandages or compression garments that help maintain the reduction of swelling achieved by MLD and prevent fluid from reaccumulating. This can include multi-layering bandaging in the short term and compression garments in the long term.

This can also include the use of lymph taping. This therapeutic technique involves strategically placing lymph tape in patterns that lift the skin slightly, creating space that facilitates the movement of lymph fluid, which can reduce swelling, improve circulation, and support the body’s natural healing process.

Decongestive exercise

Specific exercises designed to improve lymphatic flow and maintain the mobility and strength of the affected limb.

Skin Care

Proper skin care practices to prevent infections and complications, as the skin in affected areas is more susceptible to infections.

What is lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a chronic medical condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the tissues, leading to swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs, but it can occur across the entire body.

How does lymphoedema occur?

This occurs when the lymphatic system, which is responsible for draining excess fluid and waste products from the body's tissues, is damaged or blocked.

What causes damage or blockage?

Lymphoedema can be caused by genetic factors (Primary Lymphoedema) or as a result of surgery (including cosmetic), radiation therapy, infection, or injury (Secondary Lymphoedema).

What are the effects of lymphoedema?

A leading sign of Lymphoedema is increased swelling in parts of the body, like arms or legs. This can lead to discomfort, pain, reduced mobility, and increased risk of infections if not managed properly. Additionally, it can significantly impact one's confidence and mental health.

Lipedema

Lipedema is a chronic condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat, primarily in the legs, hips, and sometimes the arms. This condition predominantly affects women and is often mistaken for simple obesity or Lymphoedema. Unlike typical fat, Lipedema fat is resistant to diet and exercise and is often painful or tender to the touch. The condition can lead to significant swelling, bruising, and a heavy, aching sensation in the affected areas. Lipedema typically worsens over time and can impact mobility and quality of life, requiring specialized management strategies such as compression therapy and manual lymphatic drainage.

Benefits of MLD

  • The treatment and control of Primary and Secondary Lymphoedema, as well as Lipedema.

  • Assisting with conditions arising from venous insufficiency such as leg ulcers

  • Preparing for and speeding up healing after surgery

  • Relieving fluid congestion e.g. swollen legs due to pregnancy, swollen ankles, puffy eyes

  • Promoting the healing and lessening the pain of injuries e.g. fractures, sprains, torn ligaments

  • Promoting the healing of wounds and burns

  • Improving chronic conditions such as skin conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, sinusitis

  • Improving the appearance of scars

  • Strengthening the immune system

  • Minimising or reducing stretch marks

  • Inducing deep relaxation as it may affect the autonomic nervous system

Reiki and Seichem

Reiki is a form of alternative therapy that involves the practitioner placing their hands lightly on or near the client's body to channel healing energy, aiming to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Seichem is an energy healing system that is similar to Reiki but incorporates additional elements, including the energies of fire, water, and air, alongside the earth energy used in Reiki. It is believed to provide a more comprehensive form of healing by accessing a broader spectrum of energetic frequencies.

We offer both reiki and seichem therapy sessions, as well as attunements towards a level 3 Master skill level.

Reflexology

  • Facial Reflexology Sorensensistem TM

  • Hand reflexology

  • Foot reflexology

Reflexology is a therapeutic practice that involves applying pressure to specific areas on the feet, hands, or ears, which are believed to correspond to different organs and systems of the body. The aim is to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve overall health by stimulating the body's natural healing processes and energy flow.

Other therapies

The Mobile Lymphoedema Clinic offers a range of other therapies to cater to your needs.
